Somebody get Anthony Brown a new mantlepiece because there’s a chance he’ll be adding to his already bulging collection at this year’s Stellar Awards.

The artist, who records with group therAPy, was himself making the nomination announcement for the awards in a Facebook Live broadcast. He was joined by Tasha Cobbs Leonard who also landed herself a boatload of nominations.

It’s been another er… stellar year for Anthony Brown and group therAPy. Their album A Long Way From Sunday was released last summer and in our books deserves its plaudits. It went to number one on the Billboard Gospel Album chart and it’s still in the top ten now. This year, they’re up for categories such as Song of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and the coveted Artist of the Year. In 2016, the group was nominated for ten categories and won all ten – an unprecedented feat.

Tasha Cobbs Leonard isn’t far behind with nine nominations this year. Her album Heart. Passion. Pursuit is currently the best selling gospel album in the States. It raised eyebrows, particularly with the collaboration with hip hop wild-child Nicki Minaj but it has largely still received attention for the right reasons. And so it should – it has great songs.

It probably won’t surprise you that JJ Hairston is another protagonist from this year’s Stellar nominees. He has nine nominations. It’s difficult to find churches at the moment that aren’t singing You Deserve It, the title track from his 2017 album. That song is not going away any time soon and that alone will put JJ in the runnings to pick up some Stellars.

Elsewhere, our favourite album of last year, Let Them Fall In Love by CeCe Winans has been recognised in the nominations. CeCe is up for three Stellars including Traditional CD of the Year.

By the way, it’s 2018, can we please stop using the word ‘CD’ in award categories?

One of our fave new artists Koryn Hawthorne is up for a couple of awards, including New Artist of the Year. And in the Hip Hop category, it’s Bizzle, Canton Jones, Derek Minor and Trip Lee vying for the prize.

The 33rd Stellar Awards take place in Las Vegas on 24th March. More info here.
